I ran in to this quote today and was first thinking it came from Desmond Tutu or some other non-violence philanthropist before I learned it came from Dwight D. Eisenhower (R), a five-star Army general and the 34th president of the U.S from 1953-1961.
Just thinking... the GOP has gone so far right as I said in yesterday's blog. You would never in a million years hear a quote like that from today's republicans.
Yesterday I had a discussion with someone about bringing extra snacks with the kids to school to the kids that don't bring any and that person said that it was not our responsibility but the parents of that child.
I agreed, but what if the kid don't have good caring parents?
Now that person might not be one of the people out there with pro-life bumper stickers on her car, I don't know, but I know the person is a "value voter".
And what seemed so absolute, so fundamental, to be pro-life, all of a sudden disappeared as soon as that fertilized egg became a real baby, or later a child. A woman that becomes pregnant and not want a baby, or don't feel capable of taking care of a child, is called a murderer for not wanting to go forward with the pregnancy.
Don't take me wrong, I hate abortions, and want to fight to reduce the numbers to the absolute minimum, but maybe one of those women is the mom of the kid that never bring a warm coat to school, that never have money for popcorn on Fridays, that don't bring snacks to school.
And now the responsibility isn't that person's or mine, but the mom's?
Most pro-life people tend to be republican, most tend to support the war (seem impossible to be pro-life and pro-war at the same time, but somehow they make it work), some tend to be NRA members (do pro-life people think it's OK to blow the head off of someone steeling their car?), and most tend to go to church. And even though they sit in the pew every Sunday some seem to have become totally immune to the Sermon on the Mount
What I'm trying to teach my kids by letting them bring extra snacks to school and give out to their friends if they forgot to bring, or just didn't have any, is that it's a good feeling to give, it is the right thing to do, and guess what? It doesn't involve any religious doctrines.

today, tomorrow, yesterday?
I follow a Swedish blog about the GLBT people and their struggles in Sweden. It's a really good written blog and the girl writing it is very articulate, smart and also, maybe my favorite part, has a quick and sometimes quite sarcastic mouth.(http://libreb.blogspot.com/)
Here in the U.S. the people setting the standards are the "Christians" who have the "God given right" to tell the rest of us how we're supposed to live, love, vote, and behave. Here it seem impossible to get rid of the " Don't ask, Don't tell". Here teens commit suicide because they can't find acceptance for who they are. With all that said, well, it's easy to see that Sweden is paradise compared to here for all GLBT friends!
Of course I'm not saying that Sweden is a perfect paradise when it comes to gay rights, they need to work on a lot of things, but compared to us in the U.S. they are on a totally different level and 100's of years ahead of us.
We just finished off an election season, where the tea party had a huge success in both the house and in local races all across the nation. They claim they want to take our country back, and I'm wondering how far back exactly? To before the civil rights movement? To before blacks and women got the rights to vote? To before we found out the world wasn't flat?
The further to the right people are politically the more back striving they seem to be.
It amazes me, views I think should be put in a museum showing off how weird it used to be, how uninformed people used to be back in the days of when we started standing on two feet instead of four, those views are the same views the tea party ran on and gained huge success on.
The really pity here is that the progressive and left are caving in. While the right is moving further and further to the right the rest of the field is moving with them.
What used to be moderate republican views are now left wing views. Ronald Reagan that was such a "righty", would in today's republican party probably find himself out on the very edge toward the left.
Can't remember his name, but the last judge leaving the supreme court had been on the bench for many, many years and when he was sworn in he was a republican, and without changing his views during the years he was now considered a left wing guy.
Keeping up with the right going further and further right and frankly also striving further and further backwards makes me fear that maybe today was as far as we will get and maybe from here on we might just be going towards the past instead of facing the future.
Scary, but quite possible...

Till alla invalda SD i Riksdag, Landsting och Kommuner
Läser med förfäran och en känsla av overklighet Aftonbladets artikel "De tvingas sitta bredvid SD: Det var min mardröm" (http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/valet2010/article7892756.ab?sms_ss=facebook&at_xt=4ca998e3993ec068%2C0) och finner inte ord.
Ett ögonblick tänker jag, varför ens besvära sig?, låt sandlåderegimen ha sin gång och låt Sverige rivas, kanske vi kan bygga ett nytt "hus" i ruinerna om några årtionden.
Men jag vet genom min älskilingsförfattare Astrid Lindgren,att om man inte gör det man måste är man bara en liten lort, och det vill jag inte vara. Dessutom är jag alldeles för kär i, och stolt över mitt hemland för att låta henne gå i stöpet.
Så jag lyfter på hatten och önskar kraft, ork, mod och en stor skopa jävlaranamma för dig och dina partikamrater att stå rakryggade i denna media- och ettablissemangstyrda rasism mot "oliktänkande". Förhoppningsvis kommer jag hem till Sverige om ett år eller så, och kan då snabbt inställa mig i ledet och hjälpa till, att skuldra mot skuldra med dig och alla andra med furnuftet fortfarade i behåll, hålla upp det fallfärdiga ruckel Sverige tillåtits förfalla till.

EfterValsFunderingar (in Swedish)
En vecka efter valet i Sverige känner jag att tiden är inne att skriva lite om mina erfarenheter och intryck så här på andra sidan Atlanten.
Här i USA är jag förbluffad över hur FOX News så totalt rapporterar nyheter från en enda vinkel, men har nu insett hur det faktiskt är värre i Sverige. Här är det ju mest en kanal men i Sverige verkar det vara omfattande rakt över. Media har indoktrinerat ett hel nation att vända sig i avsky och hat mot människor som inte tycker lika.
Människor som använt sin demokratiska rätt och röstat för det parti de tycker överenstämmer bäst med deras egen åsikt har blivit kallade rasister, nazister, främlingsfientliga, har blivit utsatta för förföljelse och hot och om jag inte helt missminner mig t.o.m blivit mördade.
En politiker med kommunistbakgrund,som aldrig lyckats att ta avstånd från historiens värsta mördarregimer,invald i riksdagen genom samma demokratiska regler som partiledaren för SD, vägrar sitta i samma sminkrum som denne man, han blir utropad till hjälte?
Aftonbladet har initierat en kampanj som kallas ”vi gillar olika”. Olika som i olika utseende men absolut inte olika som i olika åsikt det har jag klart fått erfara.
Här är ett urval av kommentarer jag fått:
-Du är SÅ förd bakom ljuset
-man kan med all säkerhet urskilja ett mönster – både vad gäller kunskapsnivå och utbildning…
-…och du har en man från USA
-Det är sorligt att du ser att man enbart kan värna om en grupp i taget.
-Frågan är om det verkligen är flyktingar som kostar pengar?? Lata svenskar som lyfter socialbidrag för att de inte vill jobba??? Jag träffar dem varje dag i mitt jobb!!!!! (man kan undra varför den kommentaren fick gå helt oemotsagt, det är ju helt rätt, finns säkert många lata svenskar och att påpeka det är ok, men tänk om samma kommentar hade gällt en invandrare… oj oj oj, då är man ju rasist!?)
-Det är SD som har ett Natzi-förflutuet. Du är bara rasistisk…
Många är de som uttalat sig om min rasism, främlingsfientlighet, intelligensnivå och min oförmåga att värna om mer än en grupp i taget.
Man skulle ju kunna tro att flertalet av dem som bekymrar sig för min "främlingsfientlighet" bor och arbetar i färgstarka områden, i en mosaik av folkgrupper från när och fjärran. Typ de södra förorterna i Stockholm eller i Malmös invandrartäta förorter. Kanske en del gör det, men jag tror att de flesta som är så bekymrade över min rasism bor i helsvenska områden, arbetar på homogena svenska arbetplatser och ser inte människor med annan hudfärg, tradition eller religion än dem mer än när de veckohandlar på Matex.
Nu ska jag berätta vem jag är och hur jag tänker, inte för att jag är så vansinnigt intressant, men för den som tror att de som röstat på SD är avlagda skinnskallar med ett IQ på 47 och en bakgrund innom slavhandelindustrin vill jag ge en bild av en något annorlunda väljare.
Jag är halvt svensk, halvt Irakisk, har aldrig träffat Irakiern i fråga men det är utom tvivel att han stod för hälften av mina gener.
Jag bor sedan drygt 10 år i USA, så jag är alltså en invandrare själv, umgås med och bor bredvid människor med härkomst från när och fjärran och ingen tycker det är något konstigt med det.
Jag är gift med en Amerikan och vi har tre barn, tre halvsvenska ungar som pratar svenska med kraftig brytning alla tre.
Jag längtade i min ungdom till Afrika och trodde länge att jag skulle bosätta mig där och jobba på barnhem för AIDS drabbade barn. Men istället för att hamna i ett av jordens fattigaste hörn kom jag ironiskt nog att hamna i överflödets USA.
Jag är av födsel och ohejdad vana otroligt känslig för orättvisor, mina barn måste få lika mycket av allt, alla måste få vara med lika mycket och när någon blir orättvist behandlad gråter jag på insidan och slåss för den orättvist behandlade på utsidan.
Troligtvis är det av orättviseskäl jag nu har de åsikter jag har.
Att Sverige tar emot mer flyktingar per capita än något annat land i Europa och kanske i hela världen är orättvist. Om det nu är mitt nya hemland USA som är anledningen till den stora ström av människor som utvandrar från Irak och Afganistan, ja då är det väl bara rättvist att USA tar det ansvaret?
Att det kostar ungefär 100 000 kr att komma till Sverige som flykting visar ju tydligt att det är en väldigt orättvis hjälp Sverige bedriver, att bara ta hand om de allra rikaste som har råd att flytta från sina hemland.
Nu till den största orättvisan av alla.
I Sverige har alla sett neddragningar de senaste åren. Vården, skolan, och framförallt äldreomsorgen har alla fått enorma besparingskrav. Den del av budgeten som inte tydligt berörts alls av neddragningar och besparingskrav är flykting/invandrar budgeten.
Där har vi alltid råd, som en kommentar jag såg på facebook skrev:
“de (SD) säger att _Sverige inte har råd_ att ta emot flyktingar exempelvis. Bara det lilla uttalandet får mig att tappa hakan.”
Nu säger de(SD)INTE att vi inte har råd att ta mot några flyktingar utan bara att Sverige ska lägga sig i nivå med Danmark och Finlands flyktingmottagning och i stället fokusera på att öka det direkta biståndet till länder som behöver, men det är det väl ingen som läst eller brytt sig om.
För att det är rättvist tycker jag att en lat svensk inte ska få gå på socialbidrag lika lite som jag tycker att en lat människa född någon annanstans ska få bidrag.
För att det är rättvist tycker jag att eftersom nu de gamla inte får äta näringsriktig mat, gå ut, duscha mer än en gång I veckan, och inte ens vända sig mer än en gång per natt för att vi inte har råd, ja då är det dags att dra ner nån annanstans än i äldrevården hädanefter.
Eftersom det är rättvist tycker jag att då det är religiös frihet för en invandrare att gå klädd I burka, ja då kan vi ha skolavslutningar i kyrkan som vi alltid haft och sjunga den blomstertid nu kommer med de underbara orden: “Guds godhets rikedom”.
Det som bekymrar mig mest är hur denna valrörelse visat hur långt från en demokrati vi kommit. Om vi Sverige ska fortsätta vara en demokrati, ja då måste vi lyssna på de som röstar, låta alla som ställer upp i val komma till tals, och framför allt inte påverka hur folket ska rösta med hot om repressalier om man röstar “fel”

New Freak Show on TLC
Funny funny funny... or at least that's what I think...
You might all know my views of TLC's show about the Duggar family and their twisted views on children, God and everything in between.
Now TLC is doing it again, but this time with a family of multiple wives married to one man, somewhere in Utah (where else?).
I don't know what this new show really is going to be about, and I don't know how much the 13 kids (this one man has 3 wives and together they have 13 kids, still way behind the Duggar's 19 kids with just one wife) are going to be exploited and if they themselves are allowed to watch any TV. But it's going to be interesting to see. How will TLC portrait this wacko family? Will there be a fan page on FB for people that find passages in the bible that fits in with this lifestyle? I know for sure that many people in the old testament had more than one wife, Abraham, maybe being the most famous one. Will there be games you can play to name all the kids? Will people ask how one of the wives fix her hair or keep track on when it's her turn to be with the husband?
So I went to Face Book to see if there was anything about this show and behold there was one, only one page.... called: "Against the show Sister wives".
In the description the founder of the page says: " I have nothing against these people in any other way than how they are conducting their married life..." "God did not intend for marriage to be like this and I'm here to say it's not okey" "It should not be on a station like TLC. I am a Christian and I am taking a stand against this show because I'm tired of seeing shows like this."
Now what I'm really dying to know is if the 171 people that are fans on the page "against the show sister wives" also have opinions about the Duggars? And if so, are they positive or negative? Hmmm, why is it that I think they are all on the Duggar's fan page?

9/11
9/11, a date forever associated with horror.
For more than 3000 people, that day meant the end, and for thousands more that day changed their lives forever.
Life has slowly returned to a state of normal for most Americans, and just on anniversaries like today are the horror memories brought back to life. But for a lot of military families, more than families directly affected by the planes crashing in to the twin towers, life keeps being a horror story, a disaster waiting to happen, a constant worry of a phone call saying that their loved one have paid the ultimate price in a remote location across the world.
Let’s all remember our men and women in uniform today, let’s all give a thought to to thousands and thousands of military family members waiting anxiously for their loved one to come home, and for the enormously large number of people that lost a loved one in the war or the people caring for a loved one forever traumatized by the horrors of war.
But I want to take this one step further today, and encourage us all to include other victims in our day of memorial.
Due to what happened on 9/11 millions of people, innocent people, people that had never heard of the twin towers, Pentagon or a field in Pennsylvania have lost their lives, or been forever wounded. Mothers have lost their babies, husbands their wives, children have lost their parents. People have had to pay the ultimate price for something they had nothing to do with more than that the people accused of the 9/11 attacks looked like them, came from the same country or shared the same faith.
I read an article in Time magazine about a family in Afghanistan losing their little daughter in a mortar attack from the American forces. The shock of the troops realizing that they accidently killed a girl, the absolute horror the little girl’s parents felt. The father’s response to the Americans telling they were sorry was : “Now what am I going to do with ‘sorry’?”
Let’s think of what feelings we had on the days and months following 9/11 and imagine what feelings all the millions of people of Iraq and Afghanistan have and realize that we are all the same.
Let’s rise from the introvert thinking of where a community center can be built, who’s religions promote more violence and realize that war and violence never ever solves anything, and let’s be the first ones reaching out a hand to bridge our differences.
God bless, not only America, but EVERYONE!
For more than 3000 people, that day meant the end, and for thousands more that day changed their lives forever.
Life has slowly returned to a state of normal for most Americans, and just on anniversaries like today are the horror memories brought back to life. But for a lot of military families, more than families directly affected by the planes crashing in to the twin towers, life keeps being a horror story, a disaster waiting to happen, a constant worry of a phone call saying that their loved one have paid the ultimate price in a remote location across the world.

Right for You = Right for Me?
There has been a big attention in media the last couple of days over a nut wing pastor in a small church in Florida wanting to burn Korans on 9/11. I'm not going to get in to what I think about that gentleman but more what people read in to their faith.
Faith, even if it's in the same God, the same holy book and the same Jesus, takes such different paths, depending on what you focus on
For example, Growing up, almost all of my friends that were Christians choose not to to their military service (all male Swedes had to do military service at the age of 18), but instead picking civil service claiming their faith prohibiting them from bearing arms.
Here it's the opposite, there are few more gun loving, war supporting people than the Christians.
I've read both the Swedish bible and the NKJ (New King James), and I think it's about the same. The same stories in the old testament, the same virgin born Christ, the same miracles, the same death on the cross and the same resurrection, but yet so different .
Well, you don't really have to compare between two different continents. Let's stay here in the US.
Some think it's a bad thing to dance and sing contemporary Christian music while others live out their faith by singing and dancing. Same bible, different interpretation.
I guess it really doesn't matter if your view of the scripture directs you how you're going to prepare your steak the right way or if you have problems knitting on a Saturday.
Where I do think it is important to back off and take a deep breath is when people in their interpretations try to set standards for people in their surroundings and communities.
Just because something seems right for you doesn't automatically make it right for others. All the "value" voters out there, that think their way of reading the bible is the only way of reading it is making people with other "values" uncomfortable.
People who know me know how much problems I have with good old apostle Paul. Maybe it's because he's the one who brings back all these stupid laws again just a few years after Jesus swept the table clean of laws and gave just two great, but hard ones to live by; Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.
I wish all the people wanting everybody to live as their faith directs them, would pick those two wonderful guidelines to fight for and leave everything else to the lawmakers.
